We have a number of good whip-stick forms, especially in the Western Staff section of our VCDs. However, this is one of the best we have to offer in English DVD form. Teacher Jack Yan, whose work especially with Chen Zheng Lei is becoming very popular, gives a very clear and expert presentation of this medium sized weapon. He starts with discussion on the material of the Chinese ash, then discusses physical aspects of the weapon. He follows with a section on basics which points out some interesting features such as the difficulty of mastering this weapon and why.
Finally, the form is at least intermediate level with many hand changes, whipping movements, directional changes and passes from one hand to another. An excellent form for the weapon, not specifically from any style (as many weapons forms were in the past.) Yan’s teaching is relaxed and graceful and you will need a bit of an “eye” to translate his movements but the end results are worth it.

And remember: these DVDs—along with one on TongBei—are companions to Sifu Yan's great book, Traditional Kung Fu Trio.

Swimming Body WuDang Double Fish Cudgel DVD#24637 9 Palace WuDang Double Fish Cudgel
About an Hour

The stick length is from floor to armpit thus qualifying as short stick. It comes from Taoist monks who traveled to the Western regions in China and learned some of the western staff techniques. Mr. Jia gives a good, fast, vitalized performance of this particular stick length. Its peculiarities include lots of back slashing and flip strikes with the butt end of the stick. Turning and tight whipping actions are perfectly coordinated. Besides the breakdowns, and this one should be easy to learn if you have some training in the weapon, applications are given against the broadsword, a bit unusual. Overall a very clear presentation.

DVD #11288 Xing Yi Whip
About 1 Hour, English Subtitles

Xing Yi Bang. The "whip club" is a thin staff about as tall as armpit height. It is fast and facile. Here is a form broken in to parts with applications shown against straight sword, spear and double sabers. Good form with many changes, a real compendium of the usage of this weapon. All usage follows classical principles which, in the case of weapons, it would be pretty hard to beat.
