Tony Yang Shu-Ton (Tony) has decades of experience and it shows
in his movements. He has studied Yang and Chen styles of Tai
Chi, BaJi, PiGua and Praying Mantis. He was an inner door student
of Liu Yun-Chiao and a teacher at Wu Tan in Taiwan. This group
of videosis not "mass produced" so they cost a bit
more than the average one-day rush job filmed in, say, Burbank. The
conditions are sometimes rough being filmed in a tight studio
setting with sometimes low light. The movements are demonstrated
slowly with an eye to detail instead of flash. But all the pertinent
information is present. |
These
tapes, by one of Grandmaster Liu Yun-Chiao's best students,
demonstrate a (condensed) form of Yang T'ai Chi Chuan. We have
seen many such "short forms" but consider this one
of the best because it retains not only the important moves
but also the shape and integrity of true Yang style. The series
of two tapes, adequately filmed, is chock full of good information.

TAPE TWO stands alone as a
thorough demonstration of all the basic applications self-defense
of Yang style T'ai Chi. Each move is shown with a realistic
application. A number of them are also demonstrated in Push
Hands. The tape is mostly silent but movements are shown seperately,
then paired slowly and then at faster speed with appropriate
"Jing" or energy. A good, solid demonstration of real
applications:
- Entire
abstrated Yang T'ai Chi Set demonstrated
- Applications
of each of the T'ai Chi moves to defense

Yin
Style BaGua Kai-Men the Animal Form
This form is also known as
Liang-Yi or Two Powers regarding in name the Yin and Yang energies
from which the Eight Trigrams is formed. If you are into the
I Ching this would occupy the place of the first two lines -
one solid and one broken that are the basis of the book itself.
The construction of the form is a series of right moves in four
groups of two each pair based on one of these four animals:
Dragon, Bear, Snake and Swallow: Initially the form is done
in a straight line. From this an entire series of circular walking
changes is developed. Many consider this to be the base form
incorporating not only BaGua but Yin Fu's high level background
in Luo Han Kung Fu.From Yin Fu this style passed to general
gong Bao-Tian whose last inner door student was Grandmaster
Liu Yun-Chiao.

BaJi
/ PiGua Combination form
BaJi is rapidly becoming one
of the most famous of Kung Fu styles. It is a style of great
simplicity and tremendous power often known as the "Bodyguard
boxing' because royal boldygaurds trianed in it. Based on the
Bear and the Tiger BaJi develops a pounding force when synchronized
with proper stances, weight dropping and a distinctive approach
to stomping motions. Over the centuries it has been linked to
another style, PiGua based on the Snake and the Eagle a style
of great beauty where the limbs are thrown liteally like boneless
whips. So excellent was the ability of the styles to harmonize
with one another that for many years their practice has been
"married." This is a special form where the two styles
are actually combined in an integrated and comprehensive whole.
And excellent demonstation form this shows the mastery of two
distinct and flavorful forms.
